Samuel Robinson was born and raised in the Gullah Geechee Heritage Corridor of Awendaw.
Working in the community until his formative years in high school, Sam seized an opportunity
to further his education in hopes of returning something back to the Awendaw community.
Moving to Washington, D.C. in 1982, Sam attended Howard University where he studied
Political Science. In 1986, he went on to receive his Masters of Human Services from Lincoln
University and continued to further distinguish himself with a Juris Doctorate from the District of
Columbia (D.C.) School of Law in 1991.

During his time at the D.C. School of Law, Sam excelled as a research assistant and legal
intern on the District of Columbia Council Committee on Schools and Libraries.  It was during
his time in law school that he focused on his commitment to the senior community,
representing seniors in disability and entitlement cases in the Law Clinic.   Sam also worked for
the senior community as a Project Coordinator at the Multidisciplinary Center for Gerontology
at Howard University in the early 90’s.

In 1984, Sam served as a Ward 5 Delegate and Chairperson of the Rules and Calendar
Committee at the Constitutional Convention.  Additionally, he was appointed to the Board of
Trustees for Group Health Association.  Just last year, the Chairman of the Berkeley-
Charleston-Dorchester Council of Government appointed him to a special wastewater
committee to examine the ramifications of private ownership of wastewater facilities in the tri-
county area.

As elected Mayor Pro-Tem of Awendaw’s Town Council since 2007, Sam has consistently
worked for proactive causes related to Awendaw’s senior citizens and youth.  Additionally, he
supports and initiates a wide range of policies that further the community’s public health,
quality of life and economic welfare.

Sam’s effectiveness in leading Awendaw towards a new and more promising future comes from
years of national and state leadership experience.  As a Director at the Washington Time
Dollar Initiative, Sam organized and led initiatives to assist seniors in instructional programs.
He also served as President of the Income Maintenance Administration and Section Chief of
the Northeast D.C. Income Maintenance Program.

As a fulltime community advocate and current member of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society,
Sam aids in providing emergency financial help to individuals that experience economic and
resource restrictions.  With an open-door, good-neighbor policy, Sam looks forward to leading
Awendaw into the future without losing the value of the past.  His promise is to put the welfare
of Awendaw First in every action he takes as Mayor.
