| The Honorable Rev. William H. “Bill” Alston became the first Mayor of Awendaw in August 1992 and has served unopposed for the last twelve years. He was re-elected in 2004, to begin serving another four years. He has been a pastor of the AME Church for more than 30 years. Bill Alston has offered the citizens of Awendaw the opportunity to help shape their destiny by becoming involved in the planning of the Town’s Comprehensive Land Use Plan. In this connection, Bill and Town Council and citizens worked together and developed the Vision Statement for the Town of Awendaw: “Managed growth is the key to Awendaw’s future. The Town should strive to maintain the existing rural character, yet grow to a moderate-density residential community that has conveniences and some light industrial areas. This growth should promote compatible economic development, safeguard the environment, preserve open space, and protect the aesthetic quality while enhancing safe, healthy living conditions. Sensitivity to the rural character of Awendaw and preservation of area waterways and forest will sustain the natural environment and enhance the quality of life for our citizens.” During his tenure as the Mayor of the Town of Awendaw, Bill offered the citizens of Awendaw the opportunity to improve their socio-economic standards by coming together as citizens of one community improving their housing, and other economic conditions. Bill has been involved with the efforts of his community long before becoming its’ first Mayor. From the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the Headstart Child Development Program, Bill provided leadership for his local community, county, state, and national level. Bill Alston earned his BA Degree from Allen University, Columbia, SC. He retired from the Navy Department after serving a combination of military and civilian services for 30 years. Mayor Bill Alston has provided solid leadership for the Town of Awendaw… a Town that has grown from less than 300 to more than 1200 since incorporation in 1992 according to the 2000 census. Bill’s favorite saying is: “There is no right way to do the wrong thing!” Mayor Alston can be contacted through the Town Hall by calling (843) 928-3100. Or by email at awendaw@tds.net |
